My emotions keep impacting my life

When emotions feel difficult to manage

Do you find yourself overwhelmed by feelings you can't seem to control?

You might notice anger flaring up suddenly, anxiety spiralling or sadness that won't lift. Perhaps you react in ways you later regret, say things you don't mean, make impulsive decisions or withdraw from people you care about.

At other times, the difficulty may be allowing yourself to feel your emotions at all.

You might be used to suppressing how you feel, keeping busy or soldiering on because you're worried that if you really allow yourself to experience your emotions, they'll become overwhelming.

It can be particularly confusing when your emotional response seems much bigger than the situation in front of you. You may understand intellectually that something shouldn't affect you so much while your emotional response tells you something very different.

Understanding your emotional responses

Difficulties managing emotions can start to affect work, relationships and everyday life. You may be doing everything you can to manage how you feel and still find that it isn't working.

In therapy, we can explore what tends to trigger your emotions and how you typically respond so that you can begin to see your patterns more clearly.

Sometimes this involves looking beyond the immediate emotional response and understanding what may be fuelling it. Having a safe and contained space to explore these experiences can help your responses begin to make more sense.

Greater awareness can also help you reconnect with what your emotions are telling you rather than simply experiencing them as something you need to control.

Learning to work with your emotions

We'll also work together to develop concrete, practical strategies for managing intense feelings both in the moment and over time.

The goal isn't to get rid of difficult emotions or make sure you're always in control. It's to help you understand your emotions, feel more able to work with them and have greater choice in how you respond.

Over time, this can help you feel more confident in your ability to navigate difficult emotions rather than fearing that they'll overwhelm you.
